Simon loses his voiceOn Saturday September 4th 1993 Duran Duran were scheduled to give a concert at the Rotterdam Ahoy' theatre in the Netherlands. The band opened with Too Much Information and then, halfway through Hungry Like the Wolf, Simon lost his voice and had to leave the stage. After about half an hour, the rest of the band continued with the concert, with backing singer Lamya al Mugheiry on lead vocals. The rest of the European tour was cancelled. Here are some reactions we received from fans who were there:I went to two concerts namely to Wildenrath on 28 August and of course to Rotterdam on 4 September. I believe that I've seen them play for a total of one hour now! In Germany they played for 40 minutes and in Rotterdam for about seven (in the original line-up). (...) In Wildenrath I heard them perform White Lines for the first time. I prefer this version to the one played in Rotterdam, maybe because Simon did know the lyrics. By the way, I do want to compliment Lamya for the way in which she 'saved' the show. It was clear that she enjoyed the fact that the audience appreciated this. Maurice Bongarts When I read about the concert in Ahoy', I was very happy because it would be my first one! Duran came on stage at about 10.15 PM and already during Too Much Information you could tell something was wrong as Simon walked to the back of the stage and complained that he couldn't hear himself sing. And when Hungry Like the Wolf started Warren's amplifier didn't work properly. When that was fixed Simon sang for one more minute and then said he could sing no more because he was losing his voice. He thanked the audience and walked off stage leaving everybody in disbelief! Even John, Nick and Warren didn't understand what had happened and just followed Simon off the stage. Thea Mulder Wasn't Lamya great!?! During Come Undone I thought she couldn't sing any higher but she did! What a voice. I had a great time because of her. Thamar Zwiers I was very surprised by the reactions of some people in the audience! Tickets were being torn, people were swearing and howling etc... That was really ridiculous. Simon is only human, and it was the first time in 13 years! Inez Peeters |
